Very well-preserved specimen, part of the first gold issues of Napoleon, when he was still the First Consul of the Republic (before becoming Emperor in 1804).
It marks the transition from the revolutionary coinage types to the imperial ones, with its design serving as the predecessor of the later gold 40 francs bearing the inscription NAPOLÉON EMPEREUR.
